Small line details can disappear or break into uneven fragments during block reduction. Begin with a fine setting and check the features that define the subject, such as glasses, whiskers, or stems. If the image depends on very fine lettering, create a text-free version and add readable text later.
A flat illustration with a strong outline can tolerate more reduction than a delicate ink drawing. Compare several settings with the whole image visible. The most dramatic version is not automatically the most useful one; choose a treatment that still communicates the expression, object, or scene you intended.
