A square source works naturally with three rows and three columns of square tiles. A wider or taller source may need cropping to match that composition. Look at the outer edges as well as the internal seams: useful information can disappear before the split is even considered. Keep the original so you can try another tile ratio without losing your source artwork.
A small screenshot can look acceptable as one thumbnail but become soft when each section is viewed on its own. Start with a larger source where possible, and open a downloaded tile to inspect fine edges before posting. Splitting changes the image into pieces; it cannot restore detail that was absent from the original or guarantee identical previews in every app view.
