A grid is useful when you need to compare where edges cross a regular framework. Instead of judging a whole image at once, inspect a small group of cells around the part you are working on.
The initial portrait layout supports vertical subjects, but its cells are not square. Switch paper or change the counts if your transfer method requires a different relationship between width and height.
The photo does not move independently inside individual cells. Fit settings apply to the whole image, and every line is evenly spaced across the selected canvas in Custom mode.
Save the result as a temporary working reference and keep the source unchanged. A visible guide can help compare proportions, but this tool does not automatically assess accuracy or correct the drawing for you.
